This is our 2nd spotlight on the fantastic art of artist Kim Norlien. About Artist Kim Norlien ~

Breathtaking realism, creativity, perseverance, as well as a personal commitment to excellence, have garnered Kim Norlien wide appeal from collectors and artists alike. Norlien is known for his attention to detail. Using a combination of hand painting and airbrush, each painting is lovingly handcrafted. Kim takes inspiration for his paintings from his Midwestern surroundings.

After high school, Norlien studied Commercial Art where he quickly rose to the top of his class. Following his graduation, Norlien spent the next eight years working as a commercial artist for Honeywell key lining technical manuals, cartooning, and hand drawing military scenes. In 1986, Norlien resigned his position at Honeywell to become a freelance illustrator. His work for national companies, including Musicland, General Mills, Carlson Companies, Honeywell and 3M among others, won him awards and national recognition.

His resignation not only led to a successful freelance career, but also allowed Norlien the opportunity to begin painting on a part-time basis. His first published print was released in 1991. Since then he has published ten other prints with diverse subjects including wild animals and birds, as well as domestic animals and nostalgic scenes.

Norlien's work has garnered numerous awards and honors. In 1997, he was invited to be featured as the spotlight artist for the Wildlife Heritage Art Show. He has received Best of Show awards, including one from the National Wildlife Art Show, and the 1996 People's Choice award at the Wildlife Heritage Art Show.

This is going to be a series of posts exploring the Harley Davidson Motorcycle art of artist Greg Benson....... starting with a short bio.........

Greg Benson took a winding road on his way to becoming a professional artist. Being self taught Benson considers himself fortunate to have achieved such a large international following. "I paint my memories and interests and collectors seem to connect with them," says Benson.

Greg Benson’s natural talent was evident at an early age but he had a variety of jobs before he decided to concentrate solely on oil painting. He decided to supplement his income by teaching painting in different school districts near his home and set up adult continuing education classes. After doing well in a national art show, a publishing company offered to publish prints of one of Greg Benson’s originals.

Greg Benson then started his own publishing company and has continued to publish limited edition prints since 1992. He makes appearances and exhibits his original oil paintings at select fine art galleries and national art shows including shows in New York, Chicago and Atlanta.

And now that you've read a bit about Greg, here's our first piece of art featured in this series ~ American Legends.

This is part of the"Wheels of Freedom" series. The many legends portrayed in this magnificent painting are not only America's first sports car or examples from our oldest surviving motorcycle company, but also, if you look closely you'll see other historic legends including the Native American Crazy Horse, a Viking ship, and one of our country's true heroes, the fireman.

It's a little early in the season for blue birds to be dropping in and charming us with their songs and sweet ways. Spring has just sprung, and it's quite unseasonably cold in our area yet. I think I've seen one or two robins and I know our resident comical mockingbird has returned ~ comical because this talented bird can sing up to 200 different bird calls and assorted tunes ~ and ours has chosen to be a seagull this spring. That's right, you heard me. A mockingbird who longs to be a seagull so much she/he has got the seagull's call down perfect. That tune will change once this smart bird finds someone else to mimic. Sometimes our mockingbird goes off on the most fantastic aria of combined songs / tunes /and musical notes. And, then again......... sometimes not. Sometimes we are a seagull.

The Perfect Print To Celebrate Spring ~

although spring has come and is still undecided ~ some people's daffodils and other spring bulbs have come up, and some folks are still seeing the dreaded *snow* thing ~ one thing is for sure, and that is that spring is here and won't be going away! FINALLY............

Spring usually means spring cleaning, spring sprucing, spring decorating. One fine way to decorate is by hanging one of artist Linda Spivey's beautiful down home spring prints in your hallway or doorway, perhaps over that prim style antique table you bought at that estate sale or flea market last year. A nice lamp with a tin punched shade would do real nicely on that table, and would set off just the right amount of light on this beautiful print hanging right above.......

Yes, that's right....... art for the bathroom. Why not? Here at Direct Artwork we even have fine art for the bathroom that has a collectible and comic twist to it. Back when, it was common for "purveyors of fine household goods" to advertise their wares through art. After all, radio didn't exist and television was a long ways off down Invention Road. Ok so spring is almost upon us although those of us back East just got dumped on with snow and ice....... 8 inches of the white stuff........

Still can't stop thinking of one more breathtaking winter scene though, since this winter was a complete bomb as far as any good snowfall, you know, the kind that is so magically quiet that you can hear each flake as it falls, thick white flakes piling up as you walk that last lap around the lake. The kind that mutes the sound of the traffic up on the main road. Lovely, that kind of snowfall, almost magical.

This print that I am about to discuss is the Poster Child for that kind of lovely snowfall.

It is a print by Kim Norlien called Rivers of Light.

What makes this print the sweetheart is the lush thickness of the snowfall, the gorgeous multicolored northern lights in the background, and the three wolves. Of course the black wolf is facing us with those glowing amber eyes.......... one can hardly break the gaze. Wolves are the spirit of the deep forest ~ their howl in the midnight hours has a primeval power that cannot be put into words. It stirs the blood more deeply than any imagining. The northern lights dancing in the background lend their colorful cast to the snow, if only for a fleeting second or two.

A print like this leaves you touched with primeval magic forever. Rivers of Light is a most incredible print.

Spring is on it's way, and winter will soon be out the door, although that will not rule out a late season snow event or two, that's for sure.

With spring on the way, so are the songbirds! They'll be starting their annual spring migrations toward their nesting and breeding grounds, and it's such a joy to sit with a cup of coffee or tea on the porch or by the window and watch them sing, chatter, play, court one another, feed at the feeder, and rear their young.

Then it's time to watch Mom and Dad (who automatically have the title of Flight Instructor) give the young birds their flight lessons, and be amazed once more at the yearly ritual of watching a little feathered being spread it's wings for the first time ~ even register amazement on it's own little face that "flight" is actually happening!!

Every little boy's dream is to ride that big red fire truck or be a policeman because you get to drive around with the lights flashing and the siren on. It is a precious dream of childhood innocence that doesn't carry the heaviness of the adult world and the implications of those sirens on ~ personally I think childhood innocence is a lovely thing and I wish the world could be a simpler place like that.

But since it cannot be, we can look back on that dream fondly and keep the dream alive with a beautiful nostalgic print that depicts the dream. Direct Artwork has a number of prints that do exactly that!

This print is called Childhood Dreams and it is by artist Dan Hatala. It's got all the ingredients ~ big red shiny firetruck, the firehouse dalmation, and the little boy with his own firetruck toy complete with a ladder on each side.
